Khemisset Hanbel Rug – 145 × 90 cm, Flat-Woven Hanbel
This khemisset hanbel rug is a flat-woven Moroccan kilim from Khemisset, between Rabat and Meknes.
What is a Khemisset hanbel rug?
Hanbel is the Moroccan word for a flat-woven rug — a kilim. Khemisset, between Rabat and Meknes, is at the heart of the Ait Zemmour region, a Berber confederation whose weavers are known for dense, intricate flat-woven designs. Learn more in our guide to the types of Moroccan rugs.
A flat weave: thin, light and reversible
A hanbel has no knots and no long pile. On the loom, the weaver passes the coloured weft threads over and under the vertical warp threads and packs them tightly, building the pattern line by line. The result is a thin, lightweight rug that can be used on both sides, and that is highly durable: with no pile to flatten or trap dirt, it stays neat in busy rooms. The designs are built from stripes, geometric patterns and fine decorative borders.
Kilim, hanbel or Zanafi?
Kilim is the international name for a flat-woven rug; in Morocco the same textile is called a hanbel. Zanafi is one regional family of hanbels, with designs organised in horizontal bands, while other regions — such as the Zemmour country around Khemisset — weave denser, all-over patterns.
Material, colour and design
Like every hanbel, its design is built from stripes, patterns and fine decorative borders woven flat into the rug. See the photos for its exact colours.
Why choose this khemisset hanbel rug?
A khemisset hanbel rug is a practical rug with real character: thin enough to sit under doors and furniture, light enough to move and shake out, reversible, and highly durable. Because no two pieces are the same, you get a rug that nobody else has.

How to style a Khemisset hanbel rug
A Khemisset hanbel rug brings the graphic energy of Moroccan flat-weaving to a room: keep the walls and large furniture calm and let the rug speak.
- Use a thin non-slip underlay on wooden or tiled floors.
- Repeat one of its colours in a cushion or a throw.
- It also works as a bed throw or a wall hanging.

Care instructions
- Vacuum both sides regularly, or shake it outside.
- Turn it over from time to time: it is reversible, so it wears evenly.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth — do not rub.
- Use a thin non-slip underlay on smooth floors.
- For a deep clean, use a professional rug cleaner.
Every piece is unique
Because it is made by hand, your rug may show small irregularities in shape, colour and pattern. They are the signature of the artisan and part of its charm.
Frequently asked questions
Is this khemisset hanbel rug one of a kind?
Yes — this exact piece is the only one.
Is this khemisset hanbel rug reversible?
Yes. A flat-woven hanbel has no pile, so you can use it on both sides and turn it over to spread the wear.
Does a flat-woven rug shed?
Very little — much less than a pile rug, which makes it easy to live with.
Is 145 × 90 cm the right size for my room?
At 145 × 90 cm, this Khemisset hanbel rug suits a bedside, an entrance or the space in front of an armchair.
