Buying Guide
What Size Rug Do You Need? A Room-by-Room Guide (+ How Delivery Works)

The right rug can pull a whole room together — and the wrong size can make it feel smaller or unfinished. This rug size guide gives you simple, room-by-room rules, with sizes in centimetres and feet, plus everything you need to know about delivery and returns when you buy a handmade rug online.
How to measure your room
- Measure the floor area you want to cover, not the whole room.
- Leave a border of bare floor of about 20 to 60 cm (8 to 24 in) between the rug and the walls.
- Mark the outline with painter’s tape and live with it for a day: it is the easiest way to check that a size feels right.
Good to know
Handmade rugs are never perfectly regular: expect a few centimetres of difference in width or length. It is part of their charm.
Living room
Choose one of three layouts:
- All furniture on the rug: the most generous, cosy look. Leave 20–30 cm of rug around the furniture. Usually 270 × 360 cm (9 × 12 ft) or larger.
- Front legs on the rug: the most popular option. The front legs of the sofa and armchairs rest on the rug, which connects the seating area. Usually 240 × 300 cm (8 × 10 ft), or around 200 × 300 cm in a smaller room — like our Zanafi rug (300 × 193 cm).
- Coffee table only: for small spaces. Usually 160 × 230 cm (5 × 8 ft).
Bedroom
- King bed: about 270 × 360 cm (9 × 12 ft), placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed.
- Double or queen bed: 240 × 300 cm (8 × 10 ft), or 200 × 300 cm, with about 50–60 cm of rug on each side.
- Single bed, or a softer budget option: one or two smaller rugs or runners on the sides of the bed — our Akhnif rug (230 × 115 cm) is ideal for this.
Dining room
In any rug size guide, the dining room rule is the simplest: the rug should extend at least 60 cm (24 in) beyond the table on every side, so the chairs stay on the rug when you pull them out.
- Table for 4: about 200 × 300 cm (6 × 9 ft), or a round rug of 200 cm.
- Table for 6: about 240 × 300 cm (8 × 10 ft).
- Table for 8: about 270 × 360 cm (9 × 12 ft).
Flat-woven rugs, like kilims and Zanafi rugs, are the most practical under a table.
Hallway and entrance
Runners follow their own rug size guide rules:
- Hallway runner: leave 15–30 cm of floor at each end and about 10 cm on each side.
- Small entrance: 60 × 90 cm to 90 × 150 cm.
Standard rug sizes
Use this rug size guide chart as a starting point, then adjust to your room:
| Size (cm) | Size (ft) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 60 × 90 | 2 × 3 | Door mat, bathroom |
| 120 × 180 | 4 × 6 | Entrance, bedside |
| 160 × 230 | 5 × 8 | Small living room, under a coffee table |
| 200 × 300 | 6.5 × 10 | Living room, double bed, table for 4 |
| 240 × 300 | 8 × 10 | Living room, queen bed, table for 6 |
| 270 × 360 | 9 × 12 | Large living room, king bed |
Moroccan rugs are woven to the size of the loom rather than to standard sizes, so you will often find in-between dimensions — like our Beni Ourain rug at 337 × 200 cm.

How delivery works
- Free tracked shipping worldwide on every order, with no minimum.
- Prepared in 2–3 business days, then delivered in about 2–3 business days in France, 3–7 in Europe and 5–15 in the rest of the world.
- Rolled, never folded, and wrapped in protective packaging.
- Outside the European Union, local customs duties may apply and are paid by the recipient.
When your rug arrives
Unroll it and let it rest flat for 24 to 48 hours. If the corners curl, roll it gently the other way for a few hours. A little shedding during the first weeks is normal for a wool rug.
Returns
You have 14 days from delivery to change your mind, in line with the EU right of withdrawal. Return shipping is paid by the customer, and we refund you within 14 days. All the details are on our Shipping & Returns page.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to choose a rug that is too big or too small?
Too big, almost always. A rug that is too small makes a room look disconnected; a slightly larger rug makes it feel bigger and calmer.
Can I put a thick Beni Ourain rug under a dining table?
You can, but chairs move more easily on flat-woven rugs, which are also easier to clean after meals.
How do I use this rug size guide if my room has an unusual shape?
Measure the area you want to define — the seating area, the bed or the table — rather than the whole room. Then pick the closest size and check it on the floor with painter’s tape.
Do you ship worldwide?
Yes — shipping is free and tracked to every country.
